Thompson History

Thompson Aluminum Casting Co. (TAC) was founded in 1946 by Roy Thompson. The company was small and had one to three employees between 1946 and 1972. At that time, the primary product of TAC was aluminum patterns for gray iron foundries.

In 1972 TAC was purchased by Robert Thomas and his two sons, with the concept of growing from a three-man shop producing relatively simple parts to a major producer of aluminum and magnesium castings. From 1972 to 1975 TAC occupied less than 4,000 square feet, but soon began to take on work serving general commercial markets, and sales grew exponentially. In 1980 TAC acquired a 26,000 square foot facility in nearby Garfield Heights, Ohio.

With this new modernized facility, the company entered the highly sought after aircraft market. Internal systems were substantially upgraded, and new equipment was purchased. Many aerospace manufacturers, including G.E, Pratt Whitney, and McDonald Douglas certified TAC to produce aircraft engine components. In addition, TAC started a prototyping program to produce experimental castings (functional prototypes) for simulated testing of future structural automotive components.

In November 1996, TAC suffered a major setback with the death of its president, Robert A. Thomas. Upon his death, his brother and partner for 24 years assumed the presidency. He has since led the company in many critical directions.

In 1998 TAC obtained QS/ISO 9000 registration. Mass Foundry (Cambridge, MA.) was purchased in 1999, enabling the company to expand into the semi-conductor industry.

The new millennium brought major changes to TAC. With sales consistently increasing each year, the need to expand became a necessity. TAC then constructed a new 60,000 square foot state-of-the art facility. At this time, the equipment and quality systems were upgraded. NADCAP and AS9100 certification were obtained in 2004 and led to accreditations from such companies as Boeing, Rolls-Royce, Schweizer Aircraft, Bell Helicopter, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Parker, Goodrich, and Airbus.

TAC has since realized the need for a finished product from our customer. In 2010 we purchased a machine shop to assist with the secondary operations required; and provide all finishing and assembly as required.
